In June 1896 a group of local men, mainly shop keepers, formed a Club so that they could  indulge in their passion for golf on a Wednesday afternoon when the shops in Montrose were closed. This is the story of how this small group, initially called the Half Holiday Club, became the Montrose Caledonia, with the Club twice moving to a new clubhouse when they outgrew their premises. These years of growth were not trouble free however, with the Club's members attending meetings to decide whether to continue or not. The outcome of all such meetings has always been the same, and the Club weathered all storms to enjoy its heyday in the nineteen seventies and eighties. As well as sharing a prominent position in golfing terms with the other clubs in the town, the Caley, with its large dance floor became one of Montrose's social hotspots and many local people have fond memories of Saturday nights in the refurbished Pierrot Pavilion. The nineties saw
the membership decline as the Club struggled towards its Centenary year and the crawl towards the Millenium saw more crisis meetings. The members responded in time honoured fashion and closure due to a desperate financial position was avoided. As we head into another century, the hard work and organising skills of the Committee and other members has raised the profile of the Club once more, with the hope that the  Pavilion will again see successful and enjoyable times.
